There are few things more frustrating than feeling like you’re stuck inside on a rainy day with nothing to do, especially when you’ve got kids. The summer months are here but there’s always a chance that you’re going to end up stuck inside and the last thing you want when that happens is to end up in front of the TV all day long watching something utterly mindless. So instead, why not try doing something that you and the kids can all enjoy and that also helps to stimulate their brains. It’s time to get crafting! Here are just a few ways that you can start getting crafty with the kids!

Get the right tools

The first thing you need to start crafting with your kids is the right tools. Of course, you’re not going to be looking at expensive equipment and sharp objects. There are plenty of fantastic arts and crafts tools available that are perfect for kids of just about any age. From liquid glue to finger paints to safety scissors, having a well-stocked crafting drawer at home means that, no matter what you’re doing, you’re always in a position to drop everything and make something wonderful together. Plus, the more different things that you have, the more different things your kids are able to create and the more you can stimulate their creative instincts.

Let them try things out

As an adult, you probably have at least some idea of the “right” way to go about making a lot of things. You might even be something of a crafting expert yourself. However, what you will discover is that kids really don’t care about any of that. Kids want to try things and express themselves. They’re born experimenters and being able to nurture that is one of the absolute best things that you can do to make sure that your kids develop the strongest possible love for crafting and making things in general.

Don’t be afraid of mess

Here’s one thing that you’re going to have to learn if you want to start crafting with your kids: it’s going to get messy. Paint will get everywhere, clothes and skin included, paper will go flying like confetti, and you’ll be picking glitter off just about everything you own for weeks. This is just something that you’re going to have to come to terms with. Laying some newspaper down before you start so that your kids can just go nuts without it making any kind of permanent mess is a great idea. However, the truth is that mess really isn’t that big of a deal. Plus, cleaning up afterwards is a good lesson for your kids to learn early.

The wonderful thing about crafting with your kids is that there really is no limit to the kinds of things that you can create together. Whether you’re making sock puppets, painting portraits, or just getting good and messy, every day can feature something new and exciting so that you and your kids never run the risk of ending up feeling bored and wishing you were doing something else.
